Steps to CDL

Step 1: Meet Basic Requirements

To apply for a commercial license in Ontario, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Hold a valid Ontario Class G license

Tip: If you are located in Guelph, Cambridge, Milton, Fergus, Acton or Kitchener/Waterloo area, get-in-touch with PHD Truck Driving School in Guelph and they will guide you every step of the way

Step 2: Get MTO Medical Exam Done

All commercial drivers in Ontario must pass a medical exam conducted by a licensed physician or nurse practitioner

Tip: Contact any walk-in clinic or your family doctor in your area and get Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) medical done and submit it to the DriveTest in Guelph. (Cost around $120)

Step 3: Study for the Written Knowledge Tests for Class A or Class D and write the knowledge test at the DriveTest (no appointment needed)

Tip: To pass your knowledge test, study the official Ontario MTO handbook or contact PHD Truck Driving School Guelph for additional resources

Step 4: Enroll for Air Brake Course in Guelph at PHD Truck Driving School

Tip: Air Brake Course can be done before or after the knowledge test

Step 5: Complete MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) for AZ
Or, Complete DZ training at PHD Truck Driving School Guelph

Step 6: Class A – Class D drive test booking
PHD Truck Driving School Guelph, we will book and provide truck for the drive test
